Played baseball at the University of Hawaii for 3 seasons (2004-06)...Selected as Western Athletic Pitcher of the Year after going 11-2 with a 2.30 ERA and 123 SO in 109.2 IP as a junior in 2006...As a junior, earned All-America honors by the National Baseball Foundation, Baseball America (2nd team), and Collegiate Baseball (3rd team). Graduated from Valley View (CA) High School in 2003.

Set career highs with 24 appearances (all starts), 13 wins, 156.2 IP, 127 SO, and 15 quality starts. Went 5-4 with a 4.09 ERA (33 ER/72.2 IP) over 16 ML appearances, including 9 starts over 6 stints with the Red Sox...Had his season cut short due to a concussion suffered in mid-August. Held opponents to a .239 AVG (67-for-280), 2nd lowest by a Red Sox rookie since 1994 (Justin Masterson, .216 in 2009) and best among Red Sox pitchers with at least 70.0 IP...His .307 opponent OBP was the best by a Red Sox rookie since Luis Aponte in 1982 (.299). Went 3-4 with a 3.96 ERA (23 ER/52.1 IP) in 9 starts, surrendering 2 ER or less in 6 of those outings... Allowed more than 3 ER just once as a starter all year. Earned first 2 ML wins in consecutive appearances, 7/11 at SEA (5.2 IP, 0 R) and 8/1 vs. SEA (3.0 IP, 0 R)...Became the 1st Red Sox pitcher to win in back-to-back relief outings with at least 3.0 scoreless innings since Bob Stanley from 5/6-9/82...With career-high 5.2 scoreless IP on 7/11 at SEA, became 2nd BOS pitcher to throw at least 5.2 scoreless innings of relief since 2000 (also Justin Germano, 5.2 IP on 7/7/12 vs. NYY - G1). 2012 Pitched for Double-A Portland and Triple-A Pawtucket after being acquired from the Indians on 7/31. Held opponents to 1 or fewer earned runs in 17 of his 25 starts between 2 organizations...Totaled a 10-7 record with a 2.54 ERA (40 ER/141.2 IP) and 119 strikeouts. Held opponents to a career-best .213 AVG (110-for-517)...Matched single-season career-highs in wins (also 2009) and strikeouts (also 2008). Started 20 games for CLE's Double-A Akron club before being acquired from CLE in exchange for 1B/OF Lars Anderson on 7/31...Made 1 start for Portland before an 8/8 promotion to Pawtucket for his final 4 starts of the year. Led all Double-A qualifiers in opponent AVG (.208) and finished 2nd in ERA (2.44) over 21 starts...Selected to the EL's mid-season All-Star team. During the off-season, posted a 2.48 ERA (8 ER/29.0 IP) in 5 starts for Escogido of the Dominican Winter League. 2011 Pitched at 4 different levels in his 1st season as a knuckleballer, combining to go 4-8 with a 4.58 ERA (68 ER/133.2 IP) in 25 outings (20 starts). Began the season in extended Spring Training...Joined Single-A Lake County on 4/21 and spent most of the season's 1st half with the Captains, where he posted a 3.13 ERA (16 ER/46.0 IP) in 9 starts. Did not allow an earned run in 3 straight starts for the Captains from 5/12-28, including back-to-back 6.0-inning scoreless outings on 5/12 at Dayton (3 H) and 5/18 vs. Fort Wayne (1 H). Also made a relief appearance for Triple-A Columbus on 5/22. 2010 Made a career-high 48 appearances between CLE's Double-A Akron and Triple-A Columbus, pitching mostly in relief. Ranked 3rd among Indians minor leaguers in appearances...Made a career-low 2 starts. Allowed runs in 5 of 9 relief outings for the Clippers to begin the year. Transferred to Akron on 5/1 and remained with the Aeros for the duration of the season. Picked up the save in 5 of his 6 chances with Akron. Gave up 7 runs in 3.2 innings over his 1st 3 outings with the Aeros...Had a 3.54 ERA (24 ER/61.0 IP) and converted all 5 saves over the duration of the season. 2009 Went 10-0 with a 2.48 ERA (24 ER) in a season spent mostly in relief for the Indians' Double-A Akron club. Surrendered just 1 home run over 87.0 innings all year. Earned all 10 wins with Akron, including 9 in relief...Tied the 2nd-most wins without a loss among minor league pitchers.
